A Better Flow Without Adding Interior Square Footage

The original first floor had plenty of space, but several walls, closets, and door locations made the home feel more divided than it needed to be. Our goal was to make the kitchen and back hall work harder while creating better connections between the main living spaces.

In the new plan, we:

​

• Pulled back the hall wall and removed the pantry closet, opening up what had been a narrow back hallway and creating a much more comfortable transition through the house.

• Cut back the dining room wall beside the staircase, allowing more natural light and sightlines to reach the living room.

• Expanded the kitchen toward the far side of the house and repositioned the island. The original island was narrow and squeezed between the perimeter cabinetry and basement door. The new layout provides a generous island with comfortable seating and much better circulation around it.

• Created a large new deck along the side of the house, replacing the small existing deck and adding two new sliders so the kitchen and dining areas connect directly to outdoor living.

• Separated the combined powder room/laundry room into two dedicated spaces. The laundry room now has substantially more cabinetry, counter space, and storage while the powder room feels like its own room.

• Reworked the mudroom storage, replacing the small coat closet and bench niche with a wide reach-in mudroom closet concealed behind double doors.

The result is a first floor that feels larger, brighter, and much more intentional—without simply making rooms bigger for the sake of making them bigger. Every change improves the way the spaces connect and function day to day.
